Imagine having the same name as a rising sports star! It's a unique situation that has brought together two Matthew Schaefers from Long Island with the Islanders' star defenseman, Matthew Schaefer.
The 18-year-old Schaefer, drafted first overall last year, has quickly become a fan favorite. And it's not just his talent on the ice that has won over the fans; it's his wit and warmth off the ice too.
One of the Long Island Schaefers, a 57-year-old resident of Syosset, had a memorable encounter with the young star. He met Schaefer at a player meet-and-greet event, and the two shared a funny moment when they realized they shared the same name. The elder Schaefer even offered his ID as proof!
"He seems like a good kid," the Syosset resident said. "I wished him well and everything."
But here's where it gets controversial... another Matthew Schaefer, a 22-year-old from Commack, hasn't had the chance to meet the Islander yet. When he first heard about the draft pick, his friends couldn't resist the joke: "Oh, congrats on the No. 1 pick!"
"It was definitely weird, but it was funny," the Commack Schaefer said.
At UBS Arena, the number of fans sporting Schaefer jerseys is a sight to behold. The Commack Schaefer attended a recent game and found it amusing to see so many people wearing his name.
"I was making a joke to my buddy, 'Oh, look at all these people repping my jersey,'" he said.
Having the same name as a star athlete can lead to some interesting experiences. Just think of the famous ESPN commercial where a man named Michael Jordan causes disappointment when he's not the NBA legend. While the Islanders' Schaefer isn't at that level yet, similar situations have occurred for the Long Island Schaefers.
"I coach AAU basketball, and when I met some new parents, they asked if I was the Matthew Schaefer like the Islanders player," the Commack Schaefer shared.
And this is the part most people miss... the Syosset Schaefer has had a different experience. People recognize his name and greet him with applause.
"They're saying 'Matthew Schaefer' everywhere I go," he said.
As the Islanders' Schaefer continues to shine, with 16 goals and 23 assists so far, his fellow Schaefers can look forward to more memorable interactions.
So, what do you think? Is having the same name as a sports star a blessing or a curse? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
